Scarce and early (1618) critique of the Rosicrucians

[Frankfurt am Main], Christoph Vetter, 1618. 8vo (15,8 x 9 cm). 63, [1] pp. Modern dark brown full calf, some blind- and gilttooling. Paper browned, otherwise in good condition.

 

First edition of a scarce pamphlet on the Rosicrucians, published just four years after De Fama Fraternitatis Rosae Crucis (1614).

 

"In dieser nüchternen und skeptischen Untersuchung enttarnte dieser die Rosenkreuzer als Sekte, die häretische Züge aus dem Calvinismus, den Weidertäufern und den Antitrinitariern aufgenommen hätte" (Eidighoffer).

 

In the pamphlet Neuhaus allegedly stated that the Rosicrucians had left Germany for Tibet shortly after the society's foundation. However, this statement, repeated by many scholars, appears to be a myth, as Engelhardt has shown: "I have been unable to find any mention of Tibet by Neuhaus, even after repeated readings of his book. He merely writes that the Rosicrucians could not be seen because their whereabouts were unknown".

 

According to Wolfstieg Neuhaus's critique was published in Danzig. This seems unlikely:  judging from VD17, the printer, Christoph Vetter, was only active in Frankfurt.

 

A French translation was published in 1623 as Advertissement pieux et très utile des Frères de la Rose-Croix.
